Phonological awareness activities

Practice phonological awareness with these easy to use, self directed activities and an engaging original game. Rhyme, syllables, sounding out and onset and rime are all covered in this pack. The phonic based activities have been designed with older students in mind (seven+), do not contain cutesy pictures and able to be independently completed, used with a partner/SSO or in a small group.  Words chosen are ones that students need to be able to sound out and go beyond the simple CVC or CVCC/CCVC make up. Boom Bam Pow is a fast paced original game suitable for the whole class.

What this resource includes and suggested use:

• 180 word cards- 35 different sounds

Majority have 5 words however a few have words that make the same sound but have a different spelling (includes: ack, ain, ake, ale, all, ame, an, ank, ap, ash, at, ate, aw/oor/oar, ay, eat/eet, ell, est, ice, ick, ide, ight/ite, ill, in, ine, ing, ink, ip, it, ock/oak, oke, op, ore/oor, ot ,ug, ump, unk

• 2 ‘Boom Bam Pow’ game boards - 1 colour version, 1 black and white

• 6 syllable recording pages - each page has placement for either 1, 2 or 3 syllables - 3 colour versions, 3 black and white

Cards are sorted into number of syllables each word has

• 4 ‘how many syllables’ activity pages - 2 colour versions, 2 black and white

1 page asks to write the word eg. erasable or whiteboard marker

1 page asks to make the word eg. use magnetic letters or playdough

• 10 sound recording pages - each page has placement for either 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5+ sounds - 5 colour, 5 black and white

Cards are sorted into number of sounds each word has

• 4 ‘how many sounds’ activity pages - 2 colour, 2 black and white

1 page asks to write the word eg. erasable or whiteboard marker, 1 page asks to make the word eg. use magnetic letters or playdough

• 2 words that rhyme recording page - 1 colour version, 1 black and white

Students place 5 word cards that rhyme in a line.

• 2 onset and rime activity page - 1 colour version, 1 black and white

Students place chosen card on square and then record the onset and the rime.

This resource is recommended for use in Years 2 to 5 but may be used in earlier grades if assisted or for revision in higher grades. I have successfully used these in a range of learning situations. The teacher notes and game instructions give details on how each component may be used.
